Acting for biodiversity can take a diversity of forms

“Harmony with nature and sustainable development” is the theme of the 2025 edition of the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB). At its crux lies a seminal idea: a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach is crucial for the implementation of the 23 targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework  (KMGBF) and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Champions of the Earth

The Champions of the Earth award honours individuals and organizations whose actions have a transformative impact on the environment. In 2024, UNEP honoured individuals and organizations working on innovative and sustainable solutions to restore land, enhance drought resilience, and combat desertification. The nomination cycle for the 2025 Champions of the Earth award runs from 2 to 30 April. The 2025 award spotlights outstanding climate action focusing on solutions on methane, buildings and construction, sustainable cooling including energy efficiency, clean air, and forests. The Cali Fund

The Cali Fund will mobilize new streams of funding for biodiversity action worldwide, in support of the three objectives of the CBD: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. Recognizing their role and contributions as custodians of biodiversity, 50 per cent of the resources of the Cali Fund will be allocated to the self-identified needs of indigenous peoples and local communities, including women and youth. COP 16 has fulfilled its promise to the world

“The results of this meeting show that multilateralism works and is the vehicle to build the partnerships needed to protect biodiversity and move us towards Peace with Nature” said Astrid Schomaker, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity. “We now have a clear mandate to implement Article 21 and 39.  As we do this and implement the other supporting elements for resource mobilization, the world will have given itself the means to close the biodiversity finance gap.” Learn more
